of the Appalachian Highlands

Kayla Byrd is a metalsmith who specializes in colorful, powder-coated pieces as well as sterling silver rings and chains.
Kayla was born and raised in Southern Appalachia and now lives in Johnson City. She earned a bachelor’s degree in General Studies from ETSU and is currently pursuing a BFA in Studio Art. She spent time after school in her father’s welding shop and has always found metalwork to be intuitive and therapeutic. She enjoys exploring themes inspired by forms and colors discovered during her explorations in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
An example of Kayla's work is entitled "Legion". It was selected for inclusion in the JCPA Banner Exhibition. "Legion" is a small sculpture made with acrylic, copper sheet, copper wire, and polystyrene plastic. This design utilizes layers and cold connections along with forming, texturing, and oxidizing techniques to mimic the chaotic form of an insect swarm.
You can find Kayla's work at local art shows and craft festivals. Kayla sells her work on her website and is available for custom work.
